Many people don’t believe the Bible has much to say about money.
Did you know that there are over 2,300 verses in the Bible about money and possessions? In the New Testament alone, 16 out of Jesus’ 38 parables are about finances. There are 3 times more verses in the Bible about money and possessions than love. The Word of God is an authority on the subject and the number of verses about money represents its kingdom importance.
To help us on our journey, I wanted to share with you three “must-reads” in Scripture that serve as a guide for our management of God’s time, talent and treasure. This biblical management is called Stewardship.
Psalm 1:1-3 NLT
This is a verse that I have discovered recently. My wife and I liked it so much in our studies that we decided to use verse 3 as our family scripture for 2016.
“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”
Psalm 1:1-3 NLT
This is a beautiful outline about what God can do in the life of His followers when we seek and follow wisdom from the Almighty. As pertains to money, it is my belief God cares about what we do with what He gives us. We already saw how many scriptures refer to personal finance and while this one doesn’t directly, I believe it is the essence of where we should be going for our financial counsel — God Himself and the mighty counselor, the Holy Spirit.
Luke 14:28 NLT
Let’s face it, life costs. We spend our time, talents and treasures on things we need to do, are asked to do and want to do. Get the picture? Jesus knew that the Pharisee’s would understand that and in Luke 14:28-30, He spoke about money management with regards to building a house.
“‘But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!'”
Luke 14:28 NLT
Take a step further in your own time of study and read the verses prior to 14:28. You will see Jesus was talking about the cost of something greater than a building, He was making sure the crowd of people gathered knew about the cost of becoming a disciple of Christ. No matter if we are talking about discipleship or money — counting the cost in a time or money budget is key to our success in money management for God’s glory.
Proverbs 22:7 NLT
Proverbs is an amazing book of wisdom. Written by the world’s wisest man, King Solomon, the Book of Proverbs is a great influence for men and women whether they are believers or not. I have been asked by one person where they can they only find the book of Proverbs because they thought it so powerful.
I have not counted, but money is mentioned a lot in this book of wisdom. One of my favorites is Proverbs 22:7.
Many people get fired up about this Proverb because it challenges the world’s way of handling money and our views about personal finance.
“Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.”
Proverbs 22:7 NLT
As it applies to today in America, this Proverb illuminates the burden put onto those who are enslaved to the creditor from whom they borrowed money. No matter if we owe a friend, neighbor, co-worker, parent or banking institution, it is not fun to owe anyone anything.
Debt can bring undue stress, anxiety, fear, anger and a whole bag of other “not-so-good” feelings to someone’s life. This is a feeling that I used to have when I owed money to a long list of people who unfortunately had my phone number, address and email and weren’t afraid to use them for collection purposes.
As you can see from just 3 scriptures, the Holy Bible has much to say about money management.
You can be a good steward no matter where you begin. You may have never prayed about or sought God on financial matters, you may have never done a budget or you simply don’t know where to start to pay off debt. God is with you, He cares for you and wants to help you live a life of victory!
