Prayer & Fasting Guide

We hope you will join us as we pray for opportunities to share our faith with family members and friends and have the boldness to invite them to a Grace Family Church Easter Service.

Ways to Fast
  • COMPLETE FAST – In this type of fast, you drink only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option.
  • SELECTIVE FAST – This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.
  • PARTIAL FAST – This fast is sometimes called the “Jewish Fast” and involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or from sunup to sundown.
  • SOUL FAST – This fast is a great option if you do not have much experience fasting food, have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you wish to refocus certain areas of your life that are out of balance. For example, you might choose to stop using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast and then carefully bring that element back into your life in healthy doses at the conclusion of the fast.
How to use this Guide

SCRIPTURE – Each day we will give you a scripture to read and reflect upon. Each one of these scriptures was chosen to guide you through the next 21 days.

PRAYER – For every day of your fast, we’ve highlighted a few items you may want to pray about. We encourage you to use these items as a starting point for your prayer time.

ENCOURAGEMENT – We realize that you will have highs and lows over the next 21 days. Throughout the journal you will find words of encouragement to help you on your journey.

ACTION – On specific days throughout the 21 Day Fast, you will be called on to take action steps.

Day 21 – Worship

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!” Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them! Let the trees of the forest sing, let them sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
1 Chronicles 16:31-34 NIV

  • Stop and think about all the things God has done over the past 21 days
  • Praise Him for what He has done and what He is going to do

You did it! You made it the last 21 days. Enjoy Easter with your family and friends and celebrate our Savior.

Day 20 – Pray Against the Enemy

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10 NIV

  • Pray against distractions that might keep people from coming to Jesus
  • Pray against excuses that would give people reason not to come to church
  • Pray against attacks by Satan as you witness and tell people about Jesus

Continue to pray for the lost beyond these 21 days. As 1 Thessalonians 5:17 encourages us, “Pray without ceasing.”

Day 19 – Be the Church

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 NIV

  • Pray that all who come to our Easter services would come to know Jesus Christ
  • Pray for Pastor Craig, Pastor Matt, our campus pastors and pastors in our community who are preparing for Easter
  • Pray for the Church to be a source for many to find Jesus, hope and encouragement

Stay focused on the big picture. Find a way you can serve on your campus and in the community by visiting

Day 18 – Rely on the Spirit

I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling. And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.
1 Corinthians 2:3-5 NLT

  • Pray to keep the message plain and simple
  • Remember who Jesus is and what He did
  • Pray for the power of God’s Spirit to make the change in their heart
  • Pray for God’s Spirit to make the Church alive to them

We know you are unsure of how to go about this, and feel totally inadequate. You may even be scared to death. The message of Christ will come through anyway. God’s Spirit and God’s power will do it. Read 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 in the Message for more encouragement.

Day 17 – Share the Word

It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
Isaiah 55:11 NLT

  • Pray the Word of God will be like rain to grow the seeds being planted
  • Pray to understand the Bible and remember it is a doing book not just a reading book

Look for an opportunity to give a Bible to the person you have been praying for.

Day 16 – Shine Your Light

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Matthew 4:15-16 NLT

  • Pray God uses our church to be a lighthouse
  • Pray your light shines brightly to people in your life
  • Pray God would give you more opportunities to shine your light
  • Pray God would use you to be a light in dark places

Being a light means being real and letting God’s love shine through you despite your flaws. He is not looking for perfection, He is looking for obedience.

Day 15 – See the Lost

For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.
Luke 19:10 NLT

  • Pray for people’s ideas of religion to be broken down so they can see Christ
  • Pray for the unchurched
  • Pray for a continual hunger for the lost

As you’ve gone through this process, has God put anyone else on your heart? It is not too late to share your story and invite them to an Easter service.

Day 14 – Worship

Lord, there is no one like you! For you are great, and your name is full of power.
Jeremiah 10:6 NLT

  • Righteousness – He makes me clean
  • Sanctifier – He has called me and set me apart
  • Healer – He heals all my diseases
  • Banner of Victory – He has defeated my enemy
  • Shepherd – He speaks to me and leads me
  • Peace – He is my peace in every storm
  • Provider – He supplies all of my needs

Spend time worshiping the Lord as you go throughout your day.

Day 13 – Pray Against the Enemy

You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet.
Psalms 18:39 NLT

  • Pray for God to arm you for the battle in reaching the lost
  • Pray for God to subdue the enemy against you from being a witness
  • Pray for God to subdue the enemy from discouraging the one

Do not be offended if people don’t respond as you hoped, the battle belongs to the Lord.

Day 12 – Don’t Give Up

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
Galatians 6:9 NLT

  • Ask God to give you the strength to not give up
  • Pray reaching the lost becomes part of your lifestyle, because this is good

Continue to be a friend to the one, even if they said “no” to your first invitation. Look for opportunities to continue to show them Christ’s love.

Day 11 – Be Ready

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
1 Peter 3:15-16 NIV

  • Pray to always be ready to share your story at any time
  • Pray to be confident, respectful and gentle as you share your story

Practice sharing your story with a family member or friend.

Day 10 – Ask for Wisdom

Show me your ways, LORD, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.
Psalm 25: 4-5 NIV

  • Trust in God to keep you bold in sharing your faith and story
  • Pray against discouragement, do not let the enemy keep you from being a witness
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and guidance

Find times to continue to share your story with the person you are praying for. Try not to take yourself too seriously, and don’t be worried about not knowing everything about the Bible.

Day 9 – Plant the Seed

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
1 Corinthians 3:6-7 NIV

  • Pray for guidance and His leading to ask the one
  • Ask God to do His Work through the seeds that are being planted through the the fast
  • If you have already talked to the person on your heart, ask God to put other people around them who will encourage them

If you have talked to someone about coming to an Easter service, plan a time to follow up with them.

Day 8 – Prepare the Soil

A farmer went out to sow his seed… Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
Matthew 13:3, 8 NIV
Read the whole passage in Matthew 13:3-8

  • Pray for the one that God has put on your heart
  • Pray God will do the impossible in their life
  • Ask God to make them receptive to Jesus

Look for opportunities to talk to someone about Jesus and invite them to an Easter service.

Day 7 – Worship

God’s name is a place of protection—the righteous can run there and be safe.
Proverbs 18:10 MSG

  • Righteousness – He makes me clean
  • Sanctifier – He has called me and set me apart
  • Healer – He heals all my diseases
  • Banner of Victory – He has defeated my enemy
  • Shepherd – He speaks to me and leads me
  • Peace – He is my peace in every storm
  • Provider – He supplies all of my needs

Spend time worshiping the Lord as you go throughout your day.

Day 6 – Pray Against the Enemy

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:10-13 NLT

  • Pray with confidence
  • Pray for God’s power to finish
  • Pray the enemy would not distract you
  • Pray for the one God has put on your heart
  • Read God’s Word out loud–The power of the Word pushes back the enemy

Take a stand against the enemy. Remember to listen to God’s Word and not the lies of the enemy.

Day 5 – Develop Compassion

Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
Mark 6:34 NLT

  • Pray you will develop a deep hunger for the lost
  • Pray for compassion for your friends/family
  • Think about the people you are in relationship with who are lost or unchurched– Take time to pray for them

As you go through your day, open your eyes and look to see who God has put around you. Ask for a new awareness.

Day 4 – Forgive Others

Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
Colossians 3:13 NLT

  • Take account of those who have hurt you and ask God to help you to forgive them
  • Pray for those who have hurt you

Forgiveness is a powerful action. Often times, forgiveness provides more healing, restoration and peace for us than it does for the person who hurt us.

Day 3 – Confess to God

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 NIV

  • Be still so you can focus on the needs of your heart
  • Take account of your sins which need His forgiveness
  • Ask God to forgive you

Have faith, knowledge and confidence that you are forgiven. Don’t let the enemy tell you different.

Day 2 – Realize the Need

Then Jesus made a circuit of all the towns and villages. He taught in their meeting places, reported kingdom news, and healed their diseased bodies, healed their bruised and hurt lives. When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd. “What a huge harvest!” he said to his disciples. “How few workers! On your knees and pray for harvest hands!”
Matthew 9:34-38 MSG

  • Ask God to prepare you to be a laborer
  • Ask God to make you hungry for the lost around you and in your life

No matter who you are and where you have come from, you are equipped by God to be a worker. You have a story to tell. Get ready to share your story with those who need to hear about God’s love and grace.

Day 1 – Remember Your Salvation

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8 NLT

  • Remember where you were prior to accepting Jesus as your Savior
  • Thank God for the person who prayed for your salvation
  • Reflect on your salvation

Throughout the next 21 days, ask God to remind you of His saving grace.
